The Plant:
Vetiver is a tall, scented grass native to India and widely cultivated across Haiti, Indonesia and West Africa. It grows up to two metres tall, producing long, narrow fragrant leaves with distinctive purple-brown flowers. The roots can grow down to three metres deep, anchoring the plant firmly in the soil. The name vetiver originates from the Tamil word ‘vetiverr’, meaning ‘hatcheted up’, a vivid description of the way collectors harvest the roots. In India it is known as ‘khas khas’, meaning aromatic root, and has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for its cooling, calming and restorative properties.
